Solomon Opposition parties formalise coalition, promise new approach to politics

7:04 pm on 3 December 2007

Six political parties that form the Opposition in Solomon Islands have merged to create the Coalition for National Unity and Rural Advancement.

The announcement coincides with the parties outlining their policy priorities if they manage to topple the Sogovare Government.

For several weeks Solomon Islands has been dominated by a political crisis in which both the Opposition and the Sogavare Government claim to have a majority of the MPs in Parliament.

A spokesman for the Coalition, Edward Huniehu, says it will endeavour to bring a new style of open, responsible leadership and ensure that a strengthened police force is able to operate without government interference.
