Niue fish processor to close its doors for three months

Around 30 staff of Reef Fishing in Niue will be out of work for several months, with the company standing down its processing plant.

The Auckland based company established the plant in late 2004.

The company's Niue General Manager, Kim Gordon, says the fleet is being reorganised for the duration of the cyclone season.

"It took us five days to get fuel into out fishing boats this time round and it was critical that we did get fuel on now, because for the last 3 port calls we've been unable to get fuel on because of the conditions of the swell. But also we've been very severely whaled over the last couple of months. The whales have come into the region and have been eating all the fish straight off the line and that's decimated the catches here."

Kim Gordon says the strength of the New zealand dollar also means the fish market has been soft.

The company says some of the boats in the fleet will be moved to another zone, and some will be returned to New Zealand for routine maintenance.
