House in CNMI passes gambling bill

The House of Representatives in the Northern Marianas has passed a bill to legalise certain forms of gambling on Saipan.

The Saipan Tribune reports all but one member voted in favor of the bill which now goes to the Senate for action.

The Lower House approved the bill with one amendment, to include a provision requiring a portion of the gaming fees to fund the senior food meal nutrition programme.

If enacted, the bill would legalise poker games in conjunction with black jack and baccarat games, and allow the operation of slot machines.

Last month, Saipan voters rejected a constitutional amendment to legalise casinos on the island.
