Venezuelan vessels blacklisted for illegal fishing

Two Venezuelan fishing vessels were blacklisted yesterday by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission for illegal fishing.

The "Daniela F" and the "Athena Fe" were found to have encroached on the waters of French Polynesia and the Cook Islands.

The Marianas Variety newspaper reports the Commission chairman Glenn Hurry saying both vessels have been banned from fishing within the exclusive economic zones of both countries.

The vessels can only be taken off the blacklist if they provide an explanation to the satisfaction of the commission members.

The commission's annual meeting in Guam this week is also considering a recommendation to cut the Bigeye tuna catch by 25-percent and Yellowfin tuna by 10-percent.
