A district court judge in American Samoa has asked the government to conduct an investigation into the alleged beating of an inmate while in police custody.

Tilifoti Saiete was charged with disturbing the peace.

Saiete says he punched a couple of times by a police officer while in handcuffs

The Assistant Public Defender Ruth Risch told the court that the government should investigate this matter.

The judge agreed and ordered the investigation, adding that the probe should also involve the Department of Public Safety's Internal Affairs division.
