The administration in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas has again taken over running the local Utilities Corporation to try to ensure electricity supplies.

Power has been cut for much of the day in Saipan because of a lack of fuel due to financial issues.

The acting Governor, Timothy Villagomez, has declared a state of emergency to allow funds to be re-allocated to pay for fuel to run the generators.

The Marianas Variety says the Utilities Corporation's fuel stock is now good for 22 days after the administration paid six million dollars for supplies.
