The New Caledonian political umbrella group, FLNKS, held its first summit in four years in Noumea at the weekend.
The umbrella group has three members in government and is pushing for independence from France according to the Noumea Accord.
Our correspondence in Noumea, Claudine Wery, says the summit was held ahead of a meeting aimed at discussing the territory's political future in Paris next week.
"FLNKS is worried about the determination of the new government in France and the right parties here to really apply the Noumea accord. In Paris, they want to go through the processes of the Noumea accord and work on the emancipation of New Caledonia."
Claudine Wery says the umbrella group also used the summit to separate itself from the newly formed and more radical pro-independence Labor party.
