Samoa's Electric Power Corporation or EPC says the first phase of its solar photovoltaic cell project is now underway.

The EPC says households in areas which have no access to a power supply are now being registered under the project.

Most of people country get power from diesel generators or the one main hydropower plant on Upolu Island.

The programme is run as partnership between the EPC, the government, the UNDP and SOPAC.

This week, the Prime Minister signed an agreement with the government of Japan for a 40 million US dollar soft loan from the Asian Development Bank to fund the new power project.
