Solomons parliament set to resume after High Court dismisses PM's challenge

The Solomon Islands parliament is due to resume on Thursday after the High Court dismissed a legal challenge from the Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to delay parliament from resuming.

Justice Edwin Goldsborough dismissed the prime minister's case, calling it frivolous and vexatious.

Mr Sogavare was challenging the governor general's power to convene parliament on December 13, and wanted the sitting to be delayed until December 24.

According to the Speaker of Parliament, Sir Peter Kenilorea, the motion of no confidence against Mr Sogavare which was recently filed by the opposition, may not be heard until Friday.

He says under standing orders, government business normally takes precedence over matters regarded as private members' business such as the motion of no-confidence.

"But of course, standing orders can be suspended and for example they want to discuss the motion of no-confidence, standing orders can be suspended under the motion if they so wish.. But I do not want to read into it, that is up to the parliament to decide."
