The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas has been advised to diversify its economy and not depend heavily on tourism.

Jim Beighley the managing director of the DFS Pacific Division US Group, an airport retail chain, said that an economy based mainly on tourism is very fragile.

The Saipan Tribune reports that Mr Beighley told the Marianas Visitors Authority that if anything happens in tourism, it will effect the economy.

Beighley says instead the government should explore other industries that could complement it.
