Estrosi uncertain over political stability in French Polynesia after elections

The French junior minister in charge of overseas territories says there is no guarantee that an absolute majority will emerge after two rounds of voting in the early French Polynesian election next year.

Christian Estrosi made the comment on television in Tahiti at the end of his fourth trip to the territory in less than half a year.

Mr Estrosi led the French reform plans for the territory in a bid to increase political stability.

Nominations for a new 57-member assembly close on December the 31st, with voting to be held on January the 27th and February the 10th.

The last election was held in 2004 but because of irregularities, the French supreme court annulled most results, forcing a by-election in 2005 to choose 37 assembly members.
