Cooks turns to Samoa in bid to cut fuel costs

4:09 pm on 19 December 2007

The Cook Islands Finance Minister, Sir Terepai Maoate, is looking to Samoa for ideas on how to lower the cost of fuel.

He is planning talks in Apia early next month.

Sir Terepai says he wants to see the problem of rising fuel costs sorted out as soon as possible and would have met his Samoa counterpart this week had aircraft seats been available.

He says the Government must intervene and look at reasonable solutions when there are negative influences on the economy.

Sir Terepai says the country has already discussed the bulk purchase of fuel and utilisation of one tanker by suppliers to maximise volume and lower costs.

And he says Samoa has an efficient system for the purchase and import of fuel and this means they pay cheaper fuel prices than Cook Islanders.
