The French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, has called for a march in Papeete in protest at reported plans for the Marquesas islands to break away from French Polynesia to become a new and separate French dependency.
This follows comments by the mayor of Ua Pou, Joseph Kahia, made after meeting the junior French overseas territories minister, Christian Estrosi, earlier this week.
Mr Temaru described the proposal as state terrorism and inadmissible banditry fomented by the French state.
He says next year's municipal elections will sweep the Marquesas mayors from office.
Mr Temaru also says he wants to circulate a petition seeking to put French Polynesia back on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.
