Samoa PM receptive of possible legal action against right hand drive switch

11:53 am on 22 December 2007

Samoa's Prime Minister says people against the government's right hand drive proposal have a democratic right to take legal action against the move.

But Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi says there is no need for Tole'afoa Solomona To'ailoa, the organiser of a protest march this week, make public their action as if its threatening the government.

Tuilaepa was responding to the legal action move two days after the petition from 33,000 people against the proposal was presented to Parliament early this week.

Tole'afoa says there is provision in the constitution that could take the matter further to court if the government goes ahead with the new Road Traffic bill.

However the prime minister has told reporters the legislation has yet to be tabled in the house and those against it should wait until they see the translated version of the bill.
