Tokelauan, Ioane Semu Teao, who has been awarded the Queens Service Medal for his work with his community in the Wellington region, says he's humbled by the recognition.

Mr Teao has been involved in the Pacific Islands community for 20 years, and is president of the Porirua and Wellington Tokelauan Association.

He says while he's honoured to receive the award there are others who've also worked tirelessly for their commmunity.

"I'm honoured to be given this award, I don't think I deserve it, but there are a lot of other people who I think they deserve to be given this award, but I gladly accept it and I'm honoured."
