Parts of Fiji affected by heavy rains

11:14 am on 4 January 2008

Part of Fiji's Central and Western divisions are under water following heavy rain leaving shopkeepers in Ba town closing their doors.

Earlier police confirmed that the Queen's Highway at Sarava is also flooded and closed to all traffic.

Rapidly rising flood waters have left low lying bridges submerged and the Acting Commissioner of Western Province, Dan Vocevoce, says some people in the settlement of Koroqaqa in Ba have left their homes.

"There has been alot of rain from last night and a settlement close to the main road is also under water and the people have been advised to move up to homes that are on a higher level."
