PNG's provincial government increases funding to fight HIV/AIDS

Papua New Guinea's East New Britian provincial government has increased funding to fight HIV/AIDS following a rise in HIV infection.

The National reports that the provincial government has allocated 18-thousand US dollars up 25 percent from last year's allocation of 14-thousand dollars in it's 2008 budget.

According to the Provincial AIDS Council secretariat, 166 people were confirmed to be living with the virus in the province as of 31st December 2006, and the growth rate was projected to be at 1.26 percent

Statistics fom the Provincial AIDS Council also show that 200 pregnant mothers underwent voluntary blood testing, two were tested positive.
