PNG plans fatty meat bans as part of health campaign

Papua New Guinea is planning new campaigns and legislation to address an increase in non-communicable diseases.

The Health Department Secretary says it will adopt new policies and try to educate the public to trigger an attitude change towards a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Dr Clement Malau says this may include banning the import of fatty meats as well as raising awareness of the health effects of a good diet.

But Dr Malau says the biggest problem will be its regulation.

"We are confident in getting things done. On paper, we have been pretty good at planning and passing acts in parliament, but our major challenges would be to implement, how would we police any legislation that's passed."
