New Marshalls government expected to change foreign policy

The new Marshall Islands government is expected to change the country's foreign policy course following yesterday's election of the opposition's Likotwa Tomeing as president.

The opposition had been pushing for a resumption of diplomatic ties with China and also a new deal to improve the terms under which the US uses Kwajalein atoll as a military base.

Our correspondent in Majuro, Giff Johnson,

"This party is very strongly oriented towards the issue of long-term US use of the missile testing range at Kwajalein and has been opposed to the agreement that is currently in place and has been put in place by the Note government."
