French Polynesian bakers seek bread price increase

12:08 pm on 8 January 2008

Bakers in French Polynesia have warned of losses and business failures if the price of bread is not raised.

They say the increase of the minimum monthly wage by 120 US dollars to 1,130 dollars will result in bakeries running at a loss.

Their association has now asked the government to raise the price of a loaf of bread, or baguette, by 10 cents to 48 cents.

The bakers plan to meet later this week to adopt a joint position to be presented to the government.
