Former America Samoan cabinet member gets 13 months in jail

8:11 am on 9 January 2008

A former American Samoan cabinet member Uiagalelei Iona has been sentenced to 13 months in prison and three years supervised release for witness tampering.

The sentence is way below the sentencing guidelines that the US Government had proposed as part of Uiagalelei's plea agreement.

Last August, Uiagalelei pleaded guilty to a single count of witness tampering for telling witnesses to give false information to federal agents investigating his involvement in the sponsorship of Chinese nationals employed in prostitution operations in Pago Pago and Atuu.

Although the sentencing took place in Hawaii it's not known where he will serve his sentence.
