Samoa begins cyclone season with flash floods warnings

2:05 pm on 9 January 2008

The weather office in Samoa has issued flash flood warnings and residents are urged to set aside clean drinking water and food.

Heavy rainfall in the two main Islands of Upolu and Savaii began early this week and has caused flooding to rivers and small streams.

The weather office says the rain has caused damage to some water pipes at fresh water reservoirs supplying water to many families in the town area.

A public health official says people must boil their drinking water and clean their cooking utensils as well as their meat and vegetables before cooking.

The official says this will help prevent any out-break of diseases, such as typhoid and diarrhoea.
