Samoa police search for counterfeiters

8:41 am on 14 January 2008

The Central Bank of Samoa is appealing to the public for information to help police find the producer or producers of counterfeit notes circulating in the country.

The appeal for help comes after several counterfeit 50 and 100 tala notes were handed to the Central Bank by some shoppers and business people.

It is the second time counterfeit notes have been found circulating around the main shopping places in Apia town area.

In 2005 the bank issued new tala notes with some changes in order to avoid the problem.

A senior central bank officer says police are investigating.
