French Polynesian talks to avert bakers' strike

8:55 am on 14 January 2008

French Polynesia's economics minister, Pierre Frebault, says he will meet a delegation of bakers who threaten to go on strike in a bid to get higher bread prices.

They say the increase of the minimum monthly wage to 1,130 dollars will result in bakeries running at a loss.

Their association has now asked the government to raise the price of a loaf of bread, or baguette, by 10 cents to 48 cents.

The minister has issued a statement, saying that subsidies for flour have kept its price unchanged while the bakers seek a 27 percent price increase.

The meeting tomorrow is to find a way to avert a bakers' strike later this week.
