Strike notice against Guadalcanal palm oil company in Solomon Islands

10:25 am on 16 January 2008

A 28-day strike notice has been issued by the Solomon Islands National Union of Workers to the management of Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Limited.

The strike notice became effective this week and is expected to lapse on February 10th.

If the palm oil company fails to respond to the union, officials say strike action may start on February 11th.

The Union's General Secretary, Tony Kagovai, has told the Solomon Times that the strike is due to the continuous refusal to grant recognition to the union.

Mr Kagovai says the union represents the company's employees concerns in regards to their terms and conditions of service, wages, allowances and incentives.
