New Cook Islands Foreign Secretary admits he has a huge job ahead

The new Cook Islands Foreign Secretary Michael Mitchell has placed New Zealand on his priority list.

Mr Mitchell is currently the Cook Islands Solicitor General was appointed by the government to the key position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of four applicants yesterday.

Mr Mitchell says while he's feeling a bit daunted, he has identified the top three priorities.

"Our number one consideration is New Zealand because we have a constitutional arrangement that affects foreign affairs, the second category of persons or places is the pacific region and thirdly further afield which in our case mainly involves Brussels and the EU."

The Cook Islands is currently the chair of the African, Caribbean Pacific group or ACP.
