US again admonishes Fiji in water export row

4:13 pm on 18 January 2008

The United States Embassy in Suva is again urging a prompt conclusion to the current dispute involving Fiji Water Limited.

The warning follows reports that the Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority or FIRCA has been blocking the American company's shipping agents from exporting their bottled water.

The manufacturer of Fiji Water has now filed court proceedings against FIRCA in a bid to resume exports.

The US Ambassador in Suva, Larry Dinger, says the example FIRCA and the interim government set regarding fair and impartial treatment in this case will have a major impact on global perceptions of Fiji's investment climate.

Mr Dinger told the Fiji Times the US believes that American companies must receive fair and impartial treatment by other governments' authorities throughout the world.

He says all US Embassies in their advocacy take that mandate very seriously.
