PNG call to rescind law allowing gambling

Papua New Guinea's Governor-General, Sir Paulias Matane, has urged the government to repeal a new law allowing casinos to operate in the country.

Sir Paulias says poker machines and other forms of gambling have already driven many families into poverty.

He has called for people to speak to their MPs about repealing an Act passed last year to allow casinos and internet gambling in PNG.

Speaking at the 40th anniversary of the United Church, Sir Paulias says legalised gamblingthe will cause many wage earners to spend their money rather than save.

The Gaming Control Bill 2007, introduced by the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare, was passed in June, prompting widespread criticism from women's and church groups and prominent MPs.

The new law paved the way for a South Korean consortium to build a five-star hotel and casino in Port Moresby.
