Two candidates in French Polynesia change parties a week before election

A candidate of French Polynesia's To Tatou Aia Party has joined a rival opposition party a week before the territory's early general election to choose a 57-member assembly.

Gina San Chio On, who was in 38th place on her party's list, has joined the Tahoeraa Huiraatira.

This comes just days after the Tahoeraa lost a candidate, Timeona Richmond, who wanted to be associated with Te Tatou Aia, led by Gaston Tong Sang.

The election was called by France to increase political stability but there are no provisions to stop party hopping which was a key factor in the success of four no confidence motions passed in the past four years.
