PNG speaker sacks clerk amid mismanagement claims

Papua New Guinea's parliamentary speaker, who has been accused of mismanaging funds, has responded by sacking the parliament's clerk over similar allegations.

A spokesman for the speaker, Jeffery Nape, has confirmed that parliamentary clerk Don Pandan has been replaced by deputy clerk Simon IIa.

The move comes after cabinet reportedly sidelined Mr Nape last Wednesday while he was on holiday in Australia.

The Post Courier newspaper said Mr Nape was under investigation into alleged misuse of parliamentary funds over the past three to four years.

But his spokesman says these reports are not correct.
