Samoa court admits error in sending convict to youth rehab centre

2:04 pm on 23 January 2008

The Supreme Court in Samoa has admitted of mistakenly sending a 25 year old sex offender to serve his two-year jail in the Olomanu rehabilitation center which was opened last year.

The man, Lui Winterstein, had re-offended while serving his jail sentence in the rehabilitation center by sodomising and indecently assaulting two boys under 16 years of age.

Yesterday (TUE NZ), he was convicted again to now serve a five-year term at Tafa'igata prison.

The Olomanu centre was set up for juvenile offenders from 10 to 16 years of age.

The Supreme Court judge, Vui Clarence Nelson, says the court will make sure the mistake will not happen again.
