The Fifth International Documentary Film Festival will open in French Polynesia this week.

Twenty films from the Pacific region have been shortlisted for the event, which will run for five days.

The festival's director, Pierre Ollivier, says there are many highlights among this year's movie selection.

"We have received a lot of films, about 145 films. The programme has about 40 films. All the films are about real life in Oceania, about all the stands of civilisation, a lot of emotion films. All the films are very different."

Pierre Ollivier says the event provides a good opportunity for Pacific Island filmmakers to showcase their productions.
