Fiji interim PM says God will set election date

5:02 pm on 1 February 2008

Fiji's military chief and interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama says only God will decide when the elections will be held in Fiji.

Responding to comments by a leading Fiji Methodist Church leader, Commodore Bainimarama said many people are trying to determine the date of the election and cause a lot of unnecessary pressure.

Commodore Bainimarama has told Radio Fiji an election would only be held after a pathway to progress and stability was achieved.

He said if an election is held next year or in the next ten or fifteen years, it will all be part of God's plan.

Commodore Bainimarama went on to say that there is no need to pray for elections next year because election would take place when the people of Fiji are ready to go to the polls.

He has repeatedly said elections could be held once a People's Charter was in place.

At last October's Pacific Islands Forum in Tonga, he said an election date in the first quarter of 2009 was a workable goal.

Commodore Bainimarama overthrew the last elected government in late 2006.
