American Samoan senator calls for greater focus on social issues

American Samoa Senator, Pulefa'asisina Tu'iasosopo, says the Senate should put on their agenda social issues such as the rising incidence of child and spousal abuse in the Territory

He says there should be more protection for victims and urged the Senate to discuss how to combat the abuse of children and spouses.

He recalled the Fono conducted a public meeting in 2006 and invited all government and private organizations dealing with domestic violence and abuse.

He says the agencies were invited to make suggestions on needed legislation but he says none of the agencies made any submissions.

Meanwhile, Senator Alo Stevenson suggested the Senate do research on the amount of federal funding that has been received for drugs and alcohol prevention and the outcome of various programmes dealing with substance abuse.

He says existing programmes are disjointed.
