Food gardens in Solomons hit by flooding

6:36 am on 4 February 2008

Flooding assessments are underway in Solomon Islands after

food gardens, bridges and roads on the Guadalcanal Plains were damaged after heavy rain.

A team of assessment officers from the National Disaster Management Office have been wading through muddy roads to get to villagers that have been affected by the floods.

Assessment officers say the parts of Guadalcanal that have been affected are the major suppliers of market produce to Honiara.

The damage to the area comes after heavy flooding also affected food gardens further out of the capital two weeks ago.

The assessment officers also spoke of the threat of crocodiles that have been swept into residential areas by the rising waters.
