Vanuatu police say no charges have been laid against an Australian man who had been questioned over his alleged involvement in a multi-billion US dollar scam.

Trevor Frank Bettet is one of three foreigners who met the Vanuatu Prime Minister Ham Lini last week over what they called an investment opportunity.

But Police were alerted after Mr Lini's office became suspicious of the foreigners and consulted Reserve Bank officials who alleged the men were fraudsters.

The deputy police commissioner, Arthur Caulton, says the American and British national who fled Port Vila were spoken to by New Zealand police while in transit after information from their Vanuatu counterparts.

"As far as we are concerned, I think they haven't broken the law unless there were some transfer of funds or documentation made to commit Vanuatu to some kind of arrangement. I think so far they haven't broken any law."
