Power emergency in CNMI continues

2:22 pm on 6 February 2008

The government of the Northern Marianas has extended the state of disaster emergency declaration at the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation or CUC for another 30 days.

The Acting Governor, Timothy Villagomez, has told the Saipan Tribune that the CUC's inability to provide adequate power service continues to pose a threat to the islands.

A declaration of a state of disaster emergency was first made in December.

The CUC data show that its power plants are generating just 43 percent of their total capacity due to various mechanical problems.
