The Solomon Islands Police Commissioner has reportedly been told to resign by the country's Prime Minister.

In a letter to the Commissioner of Police Jahir Khan, Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikua, gave Commissioner Khan two options, resign or face a tribunal under the Police Act which is a constitutional process.

The letter to Mr Khan from the Prime Minister follows a charge sheet that was sent to him on Tuesday for explanations.

Commissioner Khan confirms handing in a letter to the Prime Minister's office on Monday but did not reveal the details.

Cabinet is meeting this week to discuss further options in handling the Khan case.
