Two major hospitals in Fiji's Northern Division are without proper water and power

Two major hospitals in Fiji's Northern Division are without proper water and electricity supplies for more than a week.

And doctors are worried about the plight of their patients.

The Nabouwalu Hospital has had no electricity supply for the past few days while the Taveuni hospital and the nursing and staff quarters have been without electricity and water supply for the past three weeks.

The Fiji Times says the situation has forced hospital staff to use torches at night in the hospital while making rounds in the wards as backup generators were only used in cases of emergency.

Taveuni sub divisional medical officer, Dr Hlathein Thein, says the electricity supply to the hospital boundary was provided by the Public Works Department generator.

But he says that there's a problem with the generator and spare parts are needed from overseas.

He says there is a back up generator but they can only run it for a few hours because they need to save fuel.
