PNG's Enga province hit by flash flooding

6:19 pm on 11 February 2008

Flash flooding in Enga province in Papua New Guinea has led to a call for emergency food aid to be sent.

The rain caused the Anji River to burst its banks last Friday.

No casualties have been reported, but the Post Courier newspaper says many homes, bridges and a pipe supplying water to more than 4000 people were washed away.

Access to the Porgera Gold Mine is also cut off.

Local chiefs have asked the National Disaster Management office and the Enga provincial administration for urgent food assistance, saying most food gardens have been destroyed.
