House of Representatives in American Samoa stalls funding for undersea fiber optic cable

The House of Representatives in American Samoa has stalled the funding for the undersea fiber optic cable.

The Togiola-Ipulasi administration submitted a bill to the Fono in January to appropriate 3 million US dollars of a 20 million loan from the government Retirement Fund for the undersea cable.

The Senate has approved the bill but the House Budget and Appropriations Committee wants to call additional hearings on the fiber optic project.

American Samoa is pursuing two different undersea cables, the Pacific Rim East, which will connect American Samoa to Hawaii and the South Pacific Information Network which will connect several Pacific island countries.
