Former PNG defence force boss comments on security problems

Papua New Guinea's former Defence Force commander, Jerry Singirok, says police and military commanders appear not to have control over their forces.

Major General Singirok, who is the chair of the Guns Control Committee, has voiced his concerns after a series of shootings involving police and soldiers.

In one incident a community leader was reportedly shot dead by a soldier from Murray Barracks.

Major General Singirok says there appears to be no control, discipline or leadership in either of the security forces.

"If troops and policemen can work out of the barracks using guns for whatever purposes, then obviously there is no control. The other issue is about the criminal act. Any policemen or soldiers acting outside their lawful duties by using guns for illegal purposes are criminally liable for serious charges against them."
