France says it has set up a task force that will help pass on power from Paris to New Caledonia.

The announcement was made by the overseas territories minister, Christian Estrosi, and follows a commitment given by French prime minister, Francois Fillon, in December.

This is to support the transfer of next set of powers to the authorities in New Caledonia in line with the provisions of the 1998 Noumea Accord on greater autonomy.
