The US military is reported to have successfully fired a missile at a defunct spy satellite in space to prevent its toxic fuel tank from crashing to Earth.

A Pentagon source says the missile was launched and it intercept the satellite.

The source had no further details but US officials had said they planned to fire the missile from a ship in the Pacific Ocean.

Russia and China have expressed concern about the operation.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it could be used as cover to test a new space weapon.
