PNG police officer charged with murdering magistrate Cappo

2:54 pm on 25 February 2008

A police officer in Papua New Guinea has been charged with the murder of a senior magistrate, Ivo Cappo.

Mr Cappo was stoned to death at the end of October after driving into the camp of 87 Papuan refugees in front of the United Nations Refugee office in Port Moresby.

A district court found there is enough evidence against a police officer who will now appear in the National Court to stand trial.

The motive of the killing is not known.

Four Papuans had also been charged with his murder earlier, but were dismissed by the district court because there was insufficient evidence against them.
