Britain has launched a website in New Zealand aimed at children in the Pacific.

The British High Commission in Wellington says the website British4Pacific Kids gives children in the region and New Zealand a comprehensive look at things British.

It also allowed children from an Apia Primary School in Samoa to be brought closer to their counterparts from Cannons Creek school in Porirua near Wellington.

The New Zealand education minister, Chris Carter, says the website also raises the profile of the Pacific in Europe.

"We've seen children in Apia and children in Wellington communicating instantly with each other and that has to be good for widening their knowledge of the world but it also puts our Pacific region which is probably the most unknown region in the world to people elsewhere in this planet it puts it on the map."
