An accountant for the Ministry of Police and Prisons in Samoa has been charged with allegedly misappropriating public funds.

The assistant police commissioner, Papalii Li'o, has confirmed police are investigating.

The accountant's name has been suppressed but Papalii Li'o says more information will be made public eventually.

Unnamed police sources say a raid was carried out in the accounts section of the Ministry last Friday after working hours, on instructions from the police professional standards unit and the criminal investigation department.

Around half a million US dollars is allegedly involved.
