More sex offenders in Fiji are young

There seems to be an increase in young sex offenders in Fiji.

Overall there appears to be a surge in the number of sex crimes in recent months, with the police recording 16 cases of offences against public morality in the first two months of this year.

The Deputy Co-ordinator at the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre, Edwina Kotoisuva, says they have noticed the age of those involved is changing:

"What we are seeing is we are getting a trend of younger offenders, juvenile offenders of sexual assault and that's recent trend that we have identified."

Ms Kotoisuva says there is an element of machoism that comes in with increased militarism, such as that which has followed the coup of 2006.
