Police station attacked in Nauru

5:56 am on 10 March 2008

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs believes there is a chance of further violence in Nauru after the country's mainpolice station was set on fire over the weekend.

A 100-strong crowd attacked the station early on Saturday, after earlier taking part in a protest against the loading of a phosphate ship in the country's port.

Phosphate is a political issue in Nauru, with misuse of the resource, poor investment and corruption blamed for the lack of income from the dwindling resource.

100 civilians, including school students, have been deputised by Australian police in Nauru to help curtail any mob violence.
