American Samoa and Puerto Rico push US over food stamps

2:08 pm on 10 March 2008

The delegates from American Samoa and Puerto Rico to the US Congress are urging House and Senate leaders to include them in a reauthorisation measure that would continue funding for the Food Stamp Act.

The Department of Director Talia Faafetai Laulualo says DHSS receives close to five million US dollars a year for monthly food vouchers for elderly and disabled citizens and administration costs.

But current funding expires in less than a week unless Congress approves a new law or a continuing resolution.

American Samoa's member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says he's pushing for urgent action.
